Haberl Hut - Tantalus Provincial Park
A simple ACC alpine hut in a spectacular location. You walk out the door and you are in massive glaciated alpine terrain. If you are coming to recreate here, you better know exactly what you are doing - I’ve seen crevasses 200 feet from the door of the hut. Now the ACC doesn’t keep it open in the heart of the winter, but later in the season - March, April, May - it is one of the best places on the coast to pursue ski mountaineering objectives. It’s a simple, self sufficient hut, so be prepared and come to shred and play hard in the mountains. If you don’t have the core skills of crevasse rescue, whiteout navigation and avalanche terrain management hire a guide or come back when you have ADVANCED skills.

Strengths
The wildest ski mountaineering terrain RIGHT OUT THE DOOR. Some of my all time favourite ski runs are here - north face of Serratus and the Whale Back on Dione.
Easy, quick, cheap trip. 6 min heli flight from Squamish. I can leave my house at 7 am and be strapping on the skis at 730 am. The pinnacle of smash and grab - one night at the hut, and two full days is an amazing amount of spectacular skiing close at hand.
Weaknesses
The weather! Its the coast. These peaks are right out of the ocean. One winter no one could even get up to the hut for 7 weeks! Whiteout and massive storms are the norm. Unfortunately it has become popular so it gets booked up well ahead of time…when really this hut should be booked up 24 hours in advance when you have a solid forecast.
No safe/flat light skiing. No trees, even in flat light you could ski into a crevasse or off a cliff in many places.
Simple hut, bunks, but small groups. Has a wood stove now which is great. No power, no running water
When and why to ski at the Haberl? March and April. Think short trip, one night out, ski mountaineering smash and grab.
